Our Story

A small family. A small island.

Niru started as a quiet idea — to build the kind of place we'd want our own friends to stay.

Since 2021

We are a small family on a small island. Niru started as a quiet idea between us — the kind of place we would want our own friends to stay in if they came to the Maldives.

Not a resort. Not a five-star label. A clean, modern home, opened to a few guests at a time, where the people who live here cook, host, and share the corners of Gaafaru we grew up in.

We've been quietly hosting since 2021. We are lucky to have found a calm, beautiful island that the wider guesthouse map hasn't quite caught up with. And we hope it stays that way for a long time.

i. The garden
The Name

Niru — young shoots, from the base of the trees.

In Dhivehi, niru describes young saplings emerging from the base of a tree — new shoots growing from old roots. We chose the name because it described what we were trying to make: something young, that grew quietly out of something older.

The Maldivian tourism map is shifting. Most of the country still associates a visit with over-water villas and seaplane transfers. We were interested in the other version — staying inside a real community, on a real island, with real neighbours. A new kind of Maldivian hospitality, growing from what was already here.

ii. In the kitchen
The Team

Small on purpose.

The same small team runs the bookings, the kitchen, the boats, and captures your memories as photo and video. No third parties, no markups, no shifts of strangers passing through.

When you write to inquire, you reach the host. When you arrive, the same people greet you. When you leave, you have their numbers. It's a small operation by design — small enough to know your name, your dietary preferences, and which excursion you wanted to do twice.

A personalised experience, a personalised service.

About Gaafaru

A real Maldivian island, with its own rich underwater life.

Gaafaru sits at the northern edge of North Malé Atoll, inside its own small elliptical reef structure — a separate natural atoll from the main chain. The reef surrounds Burulu Falhu, the second-largest natural lagoon in the Maldives.

The island itself is about 500 by 450 metres, walkable end-to-end in under an hour. Roughly a thousand neighbours. A school, a health centre, a futsal field, a handful of small cafés. Boats leave at dawn. The call to prayer marks the day.

iii. Underwater
A Long History

The reef that caught ships.

Because the Gaafaru reef sits on a long-used shipping channel between Malé and the north of the country, it has a maritime history that runs back to the 19th century. Three named wrecks rest within reach of our boat — the SS Seagull, a 1,000-ton steamship that sank in 1897 en route to India; the Erlangen, named after the German city; and Lady Christine, a 1974 survey vessel.

The SS Seagull sits at around 30 metres on the atoll's eastern edge, with its anchor at 6 metres on top of the reef. It's now a thriving artificial reef covered in coral. The dive operators we work with know all three by name.

A Future Already Being Drawn

Gaafaru is being protected, not forgotten.

Foster + Partners, working with the Maldives Fund Management Corporation, have drawn a 100-year masterplan for Gaafaru. The plan addresses sea-level rise, reduces standard land reclamation by 45%, and returns 70% of any reclaimed land to native habitat. There's a proposed marine institute, a network of protected areas, and a careful, integrated tourism model.

Niru is part of the early architecture of careful tourism here — a small, family-run guesthouse on an island that's being deliberately developed as a model for sustainable Maldivian tourism. We came early. We hope to stay for a long time.
